EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured psychological therapy that helps people process trauma and other distressing or overwhelming experiences. EMDR is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD, but there is lots of research around EMDR being effective in treating other concerns such as anxiety and panic attacks, depression, phobias, chronic pain, complicated grief, and low self-esteem to name a few. EMDR is based on the principle that just like our body has the innate ability to heal, so does our brain!

EMDR can take different lengths of time, depending on the individuals circumstances. For some, more time will be dedicated to the ‘preparation’ phase of EMDR - having any questions or concerns about EMDR answered by your therapist, establishing a ‘stop signal’ as well as strategies to establish a sense of calm and safety both in and out of session. For others, some memories may resolve in a single session, but sometimes can take a few sessions. There is no right or wrong in this regard!

One of the many things I love about EMDR is that the client is in the driver’s seat, and the therapist is along for the ride. The client is pivotal in identifying memories of concern, and has the power to stop the reprocessing at any time. The other great thing about EMDR is that you do not necessarily have to speak to your therapist in detail about the trauma or distressing memories to resolve them. If EMDR is done right, it can be a very empowering, life changing therapy.

As of September 2025, I have been trained in part 1 Relational-Integrative EMDR. Think of RI-EMDR as a wonderful ‘soup’ of evidence-based modalities - Resource Therapy (RT), Imagery Rescripting, Attachment-Informed EMDR and Polyvagal Theory, to name a few. If this has sparked your interest, feel free to email me or give me a call to discuss if this might be a good fit for you.
